Who Can Apply for KEAM 2027?

Nativity

Candidates are classified as Keralites, Non-Keralites Category I and Non-Keralites Category II, with different seat eligibility. Keralites and certain categories of non-Keralites are eligible for state merit seats, while others can be considered for specific seats as per the prospectus.

Age

For engineering, candidates should have completed 17 years of age as on December 31 of the admission year. There is no upper age limit for engineering. Medical course age rules follow NEET UG and NMC norms.

Academic qualification for B.Tech

You must pass Plus Two or equivalent with Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects, along with Chemistry, Computer Science, Biotechnology or Biology as the third subject. You need at least 45 percent marks put together in these three subjects (relaxations for SC/ST and certain categories as per the prospectus). This applies to state syllabus, CBSE, ISC and other recognised boards.

KEAM 2027 Exam Pattern

Based on the computer-based pattern used in recent years, the KEAM 2027 engineering exam is expected to have a single paper covering Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.

SubjectQuestionsMarks
Mathematics75300
Physics45180
Chemistry30120
Total150600
  • Duration: 3 hours
  • Correct answer: +4 marks
  • Wrong answer: -1 mark
  • Unanswered: 0

Mathematics carries half of the total marks. Strong Mathematics preparation is the single biggest factor for a good KEAM 2027 score. Candidates applying only for B.Pharm are evaluated on the Physics and Chemistry parts as per the prospectus.

How the KEAM 2027 Engineering Rank Is Calculated

This is the part many students misunderstand. Your engineering rank is not based only on the entrance exam. Under the current system, equal weightage is given to:

  • Your normalised KEAM entrance score, and
  • Your normalised Plus Two marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics

Plus Two marks from different boards (Kerala HSE, CBSE, ISC and others) are normalised so that students from different boards can be compared fairly. The normalisation method has been the subject of debate and court cases in recent years, so read the KEAM 2027 prospectus carefully when it comes out to understand the exact formula.

The lesson is simple: your board exam marks count for half of your rank. Read our guides to the Kerala Plus Two Exam 2027 and the CBSE Board Exam 2027 to plan your board preparation alongside KEAM.

Minimum Marks to Get a Rank

To be included in the engineering rank list, candidates must get a minimum score in the entrance exam (separately in Paper I and Paper II in the older two-paper system, and a combined minimum under the CBT system), as specified in the prospectus. SC/ST candidates may be exempted from the minimum mark condition. Last year, the minimum normalised mark required for a rank was reported as 10. Check the KEAM 2027 prospectus for the current rule.

KEAM 2027 Application Fee

The fee depends on your category and the courses you apply for (engineering and pharmacy, medical and allied, architecture, or combinations). For reference, KEAM 2026 fees were reported as about Rs 700 for General and OBC candidates for one stream and Rs 800 for two streams, with lower fees for SC candidates and exemption for ST candidates. The KEAM 2027 fee will be announced in the prospectus. Payment is made online by card or net banking, or through other modes allowed by CEE.

Documents Needed for KEAM 2027 Application

CEE asks for several certificates, and missing documents are the most common reason for candidates losing reservation or nativity benefits. Start collecting them in December:

  • Recent passport-size photo and signature (scanned as per specifications)
  • SSLC or Class 10 certificate (proof of date of birth)
  • Nativity proof (for Keralites), such as a nativity certificate or a passport/birth certificate showing birth in Kerala
  • Community certificate (SC/ST)
  • Non-creamy layer certificate (for SEBC candidates claiming reservation)
  • Income certificate (for EWS, fee concessions and some reservations)
  • EWS certificate in the prescribed format, if applicable
  • Certificates for special reservations (ex-servicemen, sports, NCC, PwD and others)

Certificates must be issued by the right authority (Village Officer, Tahsildar and so on) in the prescribed format. Read the KEAM 2027 prospectus carefully for formats and validity dates.

How to Apply for KEAM 2027 (Expected Steps)

KEAM 2027 Syllabus

The KEAM syllabus is based on the Kerala Higher Secondary (Plus One and Plus Two) syllabus for Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Key topics include:

  • Mathematics: Algebra (sets, complex numbers, quadratic equations, sequences and series, permutations, binomial theorem, matrices and determinants), trigonometry, coordinate geometry, three-dimensional geometry, vectors, calculus, statistics and probability.
  • Physics: Mechanics, properties of matter, thermodynamics, oscillations and waves, electrostatics, current electricity, magnetism, electromagnetic induction, optics, modern physics and electronics.
  • Chemistry: Basic concepts, atomic structure, chemical bonding, states of matter, thermodynamics, equilibrium, redox, solutions, electrochemistry, kinetics, surface chemistry, periodic table, s, p, d and f block elements, coordination compounds, and organic chemistry.

Since the pattern overlaps with JEE Main to a large extent, many students prepare for both together. Read our JEE Main 2027 registration guide to plan both timelines.

10 Best Preparation Tips for KEAM 2027

  1. Prioritise Mathematics. It carries 300 of 600 marks. Practise daily, focusing on calculus, algebra and coordinate geometry.
  2. Use the NCERT and SCERT textbooks as the foundation for Physics and Chemistry.
  3. Practise speed. 150 questions in 180 minutes means about 72 seconds per question. Mock tests are essential.
  4. Be careful with negative marking. Attempt questions where you can eliminate at least two options; skip pure guesses.
  5. Take computer-based mock tests. Since KEAM 2027 is expected to be CBT, practise on screen, not just on paper.
  6. Solve previous KEAM papers. Patterns and question styles repeat.
  7. Do not neglect board exams. Half your rank depends on Plus Two Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics marks.
  8. Revise formulas daily with a one-page sheet per chapter.
  9. Analyse every mock test and keep a mistake notebook.
  10. Look after your health during the busy March-April period, when board exams and KEAM 2027 come close together.

After the Exam: Rank List, Allotment and Admission

Once the entrance exam is over, CEE follows a series of steps before you finally join a college.

1. Answer key

CEE publishes the provisional answer key. Candidates can raise complaints within the time given, usually with a fee per question that is refunded if the complaint is accepted.

2. Score publication

Entrance scores are published first. Candidates then upload or verify their Plus Two marks through the portal, as required for rank calculation.

3. Rank list

The engineering rank list is prepared by combining the normalised entrance score and normalised Plus Two marks. Category lists for reservation are also published.

4. Centralised Allotment Process (CAP)

Candidates register their options (college and branch choices) online. Allotments are made in multiple phases based on rank, options and reservation. After each phase, candidates pay the fee and either join or keep higher options.

5. Joining the college

Candidates report to the allotted college with original certificates within the time limit. Missing the deadline can cancel the allotment.

Fee Structure in Kerala Engineering Colleges

Fees vary widely. Government and aided engineering colleges charge low fees, while government-controlled self-financing colleges and private self-financing colleges charge higher fees set by the Fee Regulatory Committee. Students from SC, ST, OEC and other eligible communities may get fee concessions under the e-Grantz scholarship. Students admitted to top-ranked institutions may also use the PM Vidyalaxmi Scheme for collateral-free loans.

KEAM 2027 for Medical Aspirants

For MBBS, BDS, Ayurveda, Homoeopathy, Siddha, Unani and some allied courses in Kerala, ranks are based on NEET UG scores, not the KEAM entrance exam. However, you must still apply through the KEAM 2027 application and submit the required documents to CEE so that you are included in the Kerala state rank list prepared from NEET scores. Many students miss this step and lose the chance to get state quota seats, so apply for KEAM even if you are only interested in medical courses.

KEAM 2027 for Architecture

For B.Arch admission in Kerala, CEE prepares the rank list using your NATA score and Plus Two marks as per the prospectus. You need to apply for B.Arch in the KEAM 2027 application and also write NATA separately.

How to Choose a Branch and College After Your Rank

Getting a good rank is only half the job. Choosing the right college and branch during option registration is just as important. Here are some practical points to consider:

  • Interest first: Choose a branch you actually like. Four years in a subject you dislike is hard, even in a famous college.
  • College quality: Look at faculty, labs, placement records, accreditation (NBA/NAAC) and NIRF ranking, not just the name.
  • Fees: Compare government, aided, government-controlled self-financing and private self-financing fees. Check what scholarships cover.
  • Location and hostel: Consider travel, hostel availability and safety, especially for first-year students.
  • Last year’s closing ranks: CEE publishes last rank details for each college and branch. Use them to make realistic choices.
  • Order of options: List your options from most preferred to least preferred. The system allots the highest option possible for your rank.

Popular Branches Among Kerala Students

Computer Science and Engineering continues to be the most sought-after branch, followed by Electronics and Communication, Electrical and Electronics, Mechanical, Civil, and newer branches such as Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, Robotics and Automation, and Cyber Security. Core branches like Civil and Mechanical still offer strong careers, especially in government jobs and infrastructure. Do not choose a branch only because of trends; look at your interest and the quality of the department.

Time Management in the March-April Rush

For Kerala Plus Two students, the board exams in March and the KEAM 2027 entrance exam in April come very close together, often with JEE Main Session 2 in early April as well. Plan your revision so that board exam preparation also covers KEAM topics. Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics overlap heavily, so a strong board preparation is also strong KEAM preparation. In the gap between the last board exam and KEAM, focus on mock tests and speed, not new chapters.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Under the current system, Plus Two marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics carry equal weight with the entrance score for the engineering rank.

Can CBSE students apply for KEAM?

Yes. Students from CBSE, ISC and other recognised boards can apply, and their marks are normalised for rank calculation.

Is there negative marking in KEAM?

Yes. Each wrong answer carries a deduction of one mark, while each correct answer earns four marks.

Do I need to apply for KEAM if I only want MBBS?

Yes. To be considered for Kerala state quota medical seats, you need to apply through KEAM and submit your NEET UG details as directed by CEE.

Coaching or Self-Study?

Many students wonder whether they need coaching for the entrance exam. Coaching can help with structure, regular tests and doubt clearing, but it is not compulsory. Many students get good ranks through self-study using textbooks, previous papers and online mock tests. If you join coaching, choose one that does not take away all your time from school and board preparation. If you study on your own, make a weekly timetable, take one full test every weekend, and ask teachers at school when you are stuck. Consistency matters far more than the method you choose.

Exam Day Tips for the Computer-Based Test

  • Reach the centre early with your admit card and an original photo ID.
  • Read the on-screen instructions carefully during the tutorial time.
  • Use the “mark for review” option to return to doubtful questions.
  • Keep an eye on the timer and do not spend more than two minutes on any single question.
  • Before the end, review marked questions and make sure you have not left easy ones unanswered.
