NEET UG 2027: CBT Mode Update, Expected Exam Date & 10 Best Easy Preparation Tips

NEET UG 2027 is the biggest question on every medical aspirant’s mind right now: will it be computer-based, when will the notification come, and what will the exam date be? After the cancellation of the May 2026 exam and the June 2026 re-exam, the government has announced plans to reform the exam, but as of the end of October 2026 the National Testing Agency (NTA) has not released any NEET UG 2027 notification, date or official pattern. This guide separates what is confirmed from what is only expected, so that you can plan your preparation without being misled by rumours.

NEET UG is the single entrance exam for MBBS, BDS, AYUSH (BAMS, BHMS, BSMS, BUMS), BVSc and AH and nursing courses in many institutions across India. In Kerala, NEET scores are used for state quota medical admissions through the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations (CEE), along with KEAM registration.

What Happened in 2026

Understanding last year’s events explains why NEET UG 2027 is under so much discussion.

  • May 3, 2026: NEET UG 2026 was held in pen-and-paper mode for more than 22 lakh candidates.
  • May 12, 2026: NTA cancelled the exam after reports of a paper leak involving a so-called “guess paper” that matched many questions.
  • May 15, 2026: The Union Education Minister said NEET would be conducted in CBT mode from 2027.
  • June 21, 2026: The re-exam was held, again in pen-and-paper mode.
  • July 16, 2026: Results of the re-exam were declared, as reported.
  • July 26, 2026: A high-powered task force led by Nandan Nilekani was announced to look into exam reforms, including secure computer-based testing.
  • September 16, 2026: In an affidavit before the Supreme Court, the Centre said the decision on CBT awaits the task force’s recommendations and consultation with the Health Ministry and the National Medical Commission.

So while CBT for NEET UG 2027 is a stated goal, it is not yet a final, notified decision.

Expected NEET UG 2027 Timeline

If NTA follows its recent pattern, the timeline could look like this. These are expectations only.

EventExpected timing
Information bulletin and registrationAround February 2027
Last date to applyAround March 2027
City slip and admit cardApril 2027
Exam dateEarly May 2027 (in recent years held on the first Sunday of May); could change if CBT with multiple shifts is adopted
ResultJune 2027

A shift to computer-based testing could mean multiple shifts over several days, with score normalisation. Until NTA publishes the NEET UG 2027 bulletin, prepare for both formats.

Exam Pattern: What to Expect

Based on recent NEET UG exams, the paper has had Physics, Chemistry and Biology (Botany and Zoology) with a total of 720 marks. Each correct answer earns 4 marks and each wrong answer loses 1 mark. Recent exams moved to a fixed set of compulsory questions without optional choice, with a total duration of three hours. If NEET UG 2027 changes the pattern, the information bulletin will specify it. Keep practising full-length papers under timed conditions in the current pattern.

Eligibility for NEET UG 2027

  • Age: At least 17 years as on December 31 of the year of admission (based on previous bulletins). No upper age limit.
  • Qualifying exam: Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology and English.
  • Marks: Generally 50% in PCB for General, 40% for SC/ST/OBC, and 45% for General-PwD, as per earlier norms.
  • Attempts: No limit on the number of attempts.
  • Appearing students: Students in Class 12 in 2027 can apply.

Should You Prepare for CBT or Pen-and-Paper?

Prepare for both. The concepts and NCERT-based syllabus do not change with the mode. What changes is the test-taking experience. To be ready for a possible CBT version of NEET UG 2027:

  • Take some mock tests on a computer, not just on paper.
  • Practise reading questions on screen and doing rough work on paper alongside.
  • Learn to use “mark for review” and navigation panels efficiently.
  • Continue OMR-based practice too, in case the pen-and-paper mode continues.

10 Best Easy Preparation Tips for NEET UG 2027

  1. Make NCERT your bible. Most Biology questions and a large share of Chemistry questions come directly from NCERT lines, diagrams and examples. Read Class 11 and 12 NCERT Biology at least three times before the exam.
  2. Balance Physics practice. Physics is often the toughest section for students. Solve 30 to 40 numerical questions every day and revise formulas weekly.
  3. Divide Chemistry wisely. Physical chemistry needs problem practice, inorganic needs memorisation from NCERT, and organic needs understanding of reactions and mechanisms.
  4. Follow a fixed weekly test schedule. From now until the NEET UG 2027 exam, take one full test every week, increasing to two per week from February.
  5. Analyse every test. Keep an error notebook and revise it every Sunday.
  6. Do not ignore Class 11. Almost half the paper is based on Class 11 topics, which many Class 12 students neglect.
  7. Practise diagrams and tables. NCERT tables, flow charts and diagrams are frequently tested in Biology.
  8. Manage board exams too. You need minimum PCB marks in Class 12, and Kerala and CBSE board exams fall in February-March, just before NEET.
  9. Prepare for both formats. Take some mock tests on a computer and some on OMR sheets until the NEET UG 2027 mode is officially confirmed.
  10. Protect your health and sleep. Long-term preparation needs energy. Seven hours of sleep and short exercise breaks improve memory and focus.

How NEET UG 2027 Scores Are Used in Kerala

For Kerala students, NEET UG 2027 scores are used for both all-India and state quota admissions:

  • All India Quota (15% of government seats): Counselling by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC).
  • Kerala State Quota: CEE Kerala prepares the state rank list from NEET scores. You must also register through the KEAM application process in time. Read our KEAM 2027 guide so you do not miss this step.
  • AIIMS and JIPMER: Admissions are also through NEET.
  • AYUSH, veterinary and some nursing courses: Many use NEET scores too.

Number of Seats

India has more than one lakh MBBS seats across government and private colleges, and the number has grown steadily in recent years. Competition for government seats remains intense, with more than 20 lakh candidates writing NEET UG each year. Kerala has a mix of government medical colleges, self-financing colleges and deemed universities, and its government colleges are among the most sought-after in the country.

Will NEET UG 2027 Be Held Twice a Year?

Some members of a Parliamentary Standing Committee suggested holding NEET twice a year, and reforms are being discussed. However, there is no official decision. For now, plan for a single NEET UG 2027 exam, likely in May, unless NTA announces otherwise in the bulletin.

Avoid These Common Mistakes

  • Believing rumours about the date or pattern. Trust only NTA’s official website and notices.
  • Using too many reference books. NCERT plus one good question bank per subject is enough for most students.
  • Skipping the mock test analysis. A test without analysis gives little benefit.
  • Negative marking carelessness. Each wrong answer costs one mark. Avoid blind guessing.
  • Missing registration deadlines. The NEET UG 2027 application window may be short. Set reminders for February.

Documents to Keep Ready for Registration

Even before the NEET UG 2027 bulletin is released, collect these documents so that registration is quick:

  • Aadhaar card with an updated mobile number (NTA has used Aadhaar-based verification in recent cycles)
  • Class 10 certificate for name and date of birth
  • Class 12 admit card or mark sheet (if passed)
  • Recent passport-size photo and postcard-size photo with a white background
  • Signature and left and right hand finger and thumb impressions, scanned as per specifications in past bulletins
  • Category certificate (OBC-NCL, EWS, SC, ST) valid for the current year
  • PwD certificate if applicable
  • Nativity or domicile documents for state quota (needed for KEAM and Kerala counselling)

Repeaters and Droppers: What to Focus On

If you wrote the 2026 exam and the re-exam, and you are preparing again for NEET UG 2027, your biggest advantage is experience. Focus on:

  • Analysing your 2026 performance subject by subject and chapter by chapter.
  • Strengthening weak topics first rather than revising everything equally.
  • Improving accuracy to reduce negative marks.
  • Keeping your morale steady. The 2026 cancellation was stressful for many students; talk to family, teachers or a counsellor if you feel overwhelmed.

Subject-Wise Weightage and Strategy

Biology (half of the paper)

Biology carries the largest share of marks. High-yield units include human physiology, genetics and evolution, plant physiology, reproduction, ecology, cell biology and biotechnology. Students who master NCERT Biology line by line usually score very well. Practise diagram-based and assertion-reason questions, which have become more common in recent papers.

Chemistry

Chemistry is often the most scoring section after Biology when prepared well. For physical chemistry, focus on mole concept, thermodynamics, equilibrium, electrochemistry and kinetics. For inorganic chemistry, NCERT tables on periodic properties, p-block, d- and f-block and coordination compounds are vital. For organic chemistry, learn reaction mechanisms, named reactions and conversions.

Physics

Physics separates top rankers from the rest. Prioritise mechanics, electrostatics, current electricity, magnetism, optics, modern physics and semiconductors. Understand concepts first, then solve graded problems from easy to difficult. Speed comes with practice, so time yourself regularly.

Daily Routine for a Plus Two Student

  • Early morning (1.5 hours): Biology NCERT reading and short notes.
  • After school (2 hours): Physics problems or Chemistry numericals.
  • Night (1.5 hours): Revision of the day’s school topics and 30 practice MCQs.
  • Weekend: One full-length NEET UG 2027 mock test and analysis.

This routine keeps board preparation and entrance preparation moving together without burnout.

Coaching or Self-Study?

Coaching can provide structure, regular tests and doubt-clearing, but many students clear NEET with self-study using NCERT, a good question bank and online test series. Choose what fits your learning style and budget. What matters most is consistency, honest test analysis and steady revision. Kerala also has free and low-cost options, including government-supported coaching for eligible students and online lectures, which can complement self-study.

Frequently Asked Questions

Guide for Parents: How to Support a NEET Aspirant

The months before a big entrance exam are stressful for the whole family, especially after the disruption students faced in 2026. Parents can help in practical ways:

  • Create a calm study environment with fixed meal and sleep times.
  • Avoid comparing your child’s scores with others. Focus on their own improvement.
  • Help with logistics: document collection, registration reminders and travel planning for the exam.
  • Watch for signs of anxiety or exhaustion, and encourage breaks, exercise and conversation.
  • Discuss backup options calmly, such as BDS, AYUSH, nursing, allied health sciences, pharmacy and life sciences, so the child does not feel that one exam decides everything.

Backup Career Options

Not everyone who writes NEET gets an MBBS seat, and that is fine. Several respected careers use the same Biology foundation: BDS, BAMS, BHMS, B.Sc Nursing, physiotherapy, B.Pharm, medical laboratory technology, optometry, biotechnology, microbiology and research careers through B.Sc and integrated M.Sc programmes. Many of these admissions in Kerala use NEET scores or Plus Two marks, so keep your options open while preparing.

How to Stay Updated

Check the official NTA website regularly and subscribe to SMS or email alerts if available. Avoid relying on forwarded messages. When the official bulletin is released, read it fully, especially the sections on eligibility, documents, exam pattern and important dates. We will summarise every key point here as soon as it is published.

Quick Recap

  • No official NEET UG 2027 notification or date yet.
  • CBT is planned but awaits task force recommendations and formal notification.
  • Information bulletin expected around February 2027; exam likely in early May if the old pattern holds.
  • NCERT remains the core of preparation for Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
  • Kerala students must also register through KEAM for state quota admissions.
  • Prepare for both CBT and OMR formats until the mode is confirmed.

Keep this checklist on your study table and revisit it every month. Staying calm, consistent and informed is the best strategy for NEET UG 2027.

Previous Year Papers: Still the Best Resource

Whatever the final format, previous NEET papers remain the best guide to question style and difficulty. Solve at least the last eight to ten years of papers, including the 2026 exam and re-exam, under timed conditions. Note recurring topics and the way NCERT lines are converted into questions. This single habit improves accuracy and confidence more than most new study materials.

Final Word

NEET UG 2027 may bring the biggest change in years if computer-based testing is confirmed, but the core of success remains the same: NCERT mastery, regular full-length tests and careful analysis. Do not let uncertainty about the format distract you. Prepare for both modes, keep your documents ready, and follow official NTA updates. We will update this page as soon as the information bulletin is released. Follow our Entrance Exams section for every update.
